“Their work is your responsibility”.
This is the burden of leadership.
That burden does not mean that you are responsible for the choices that each person makes to engage the work or the quality of their work.
But as a leader, you are responsible for what happens when they show up to work.
Do they know what to do?
Have they been trained in how to do it?
What measures have you taken to see that they are encouraged and evaluated in their work?
Who makes sure they are developing the skills and character necessary for them to grow and thrive?
How will they navigate the complexities of a problem that has no easy answers?
We can go on and on raising questions that require you as a leader to be CLEAR and CONSISTENT.
But odds are we don’t need to look for more examples of ways that we haven’t fully stepped into our responsibilities as leaders.
So two questions to guide your leadership this summer:
What matters most to the organization or team that you’re leading this summer?
How will you keep that front and center daily, weekly, monthly so people can focus on that work over the next few months?
Answering those two questions and taking the action necessary to live out the answers will improve the performance of your team and the quality of your leadership.
When people know what to do, they’ll trust you to lead them where y’all need to go.
